Rangers fans react as Steven Davis climbs above Steven Gerrard in rankings

Steven Davis clocked up his 115th appearance for Northern Ireland on Monday night as Michael O’Neill’s side earned a superb 3-2 friendly win over Czech Republic – and Rangers fans have applauded their veteran midfielder.

Davis, 34, surpassed his own Rangers manager Steven Gerrard by reaching 115 caps for his country – making him the fourth most-capped player from the home nations. He now sits alongside former England skipper David Beckham.

Northern Ireland went into half-time 3-0 up on Czech Republic. A well-taken brace from Paddy McNair and a scrappy goal from defender Jonny Evans saw O’Neill’s side cruising, but it could have been even more.

Davis lasted until the 65th minute before being replaced by Corry Evans, after featuring for the entire 90 minutes of last week’s 3-1 defeat to The Netherlands. Davis has now overtaken Gerrard in the list of the most-capped players from the home nations.

Davis is expected to add to that tally. Indeed, Northern Ireland face two enormous Euro 2020 qualifying matches in November, playing host to The Netherlands before travelling to Germany. They still stand a chance of reaching next summer’s tournament.

Rangers fans reacted to the news that Davis has overtaken Gerrard and is now on a par with David Beckham on 115 caps, and many have applauded the longevity of their midfield anchor.
