Rangers fans react as David Bates leaves Hamburg to join English side

David Bates completed a surprise season-long loan move from Hamburger SV to Sheffield Wednesday on Thursday’s deadline day – and Rangers fans have reacted on Twitter to the move.

Bates, 22, left Rangers last summer after coming through the academy at Raith Rovers before moving to Ibrox and clocking up 28 senior appearances in all competitions. He quickly developed the nickname ‘Ginger Ramos’.

His excellent form, twinned with German clubs looking to Britain as a scouting pool in the past handful of transfer windows, saw Hamburg land the defender despite the club suffering relegation to Germany’s second tier.

He managed 28 appearances last season for Hamburg, pushing his side towards a chance of promotion at the first attempt. However, Hamburg ended up finishing in fourth position – one place behind the promotion play-off.

However, his impressive showing in Germany’s second tier caught the eye of Sheffield Wednesday, and they swooped with moments to spare to land the Scotland international on a season-long loan this summer.

Bates posted on Twitter after a move to Hillsborough from Germany was confirmed, to which many Rangers fans reacted – congratulating the defender, and hoping he can show that Hamburg were wrong to let him go on loan.
