Rangers fans react as club linked with Middlesbrough veteran Stewart Downing

Rangers are reportedly interested in signing Stewart Downing with the winger’s Middlesbrough contract set to expire at the end of the season – but Ibrox supporters are desperate for their club to avoid the veteran.

Teesside Live have claimed that the 34-year-old is believed to be a target for the Gers. The 35-time England international has started just 22 of Middlesbrough’s 37 league games.

In that time, the former Liverpool and Aston Villa star has only scored two goals and created one more. Tony Pulis has seemingly opted to get rid of the Riverside icon, rather than keep him for another year.

Reports have linked the left-footed winger with a move to Ibrox, with Gerrard already signing the likes of Premier League veterans Gareth McAuley, Jermain Defoe and Steven Davis.

Rangers have plenty of options out wide but that could all change. Ryan Kent is only on loan at Ibrox and it remains to be seen if he will join on a permanent basis. Eros Grezda has failed since his £2million move from NK Osijek.

Jamie Murphy is still on the comeback trail from injury, while Daniel Candeias has been hit and miss. Glenn Middleton’s breakthrough into the senior side has stalled.

Despite all that, Rangers fans are adamant that they believe signing Downing would be a waste of time.
