Kris Commons has claimed in his Daily Mail column – – as saying that Steven Gerrard has misused new signing Greg Stewart – and Rangers fans are completely dumbfounded on Twitter.
Stewart, 29, made his first Rangers start on Saturday afternoon as Rangers cruised past Aberdeen with a huge 5-0 win. Stewart, who played on loan at Aberdeen last season, found the back of the net from close range to put Aberdeen 2-0 up.
The former Birmingham City star also won a penalty for James Tavernier, who netted twice from the spot to push Gerrard’s men within a point of Old Firm rivals Celtic at the top of the Scottish Premiership – with the Hoops drawing with Hibernian.
Former Celtic star Commons claimed on his day, Stewart is better than the likes of Ryan Kent, Jordan Jones, Sheyi Ojo and any other options Rangers boast out wide. He called on Gerrard to use Stewart more often and give him the chance to shine.
“I found Gerrard’s post-match comments [about Stewart] on Saturday a bit strange,” . “He had admitted that Stewart had ‘given me something to think about’. Sorry, but what is there to think about?
“Basically, it sounds as if Gerrard still isn’t fully convinced, which begs the question of why he chose to sign him in the first place? When he’s on top form, I’d take Stewart ahead of any of them [Rangers’ wingers].
“It’s time for Gerrard to show more trust and faith in him. After this performance on Saturday, the Rangers manager shouldn’t be speaking about him like he’s some kind of outcast.”
Stewart joined Rangers and there were suggestions that he was not fully fit until now. With Gerrard boasting an enormous amount of options out wide, rotation is likely and it may see Stewart come in and out of the side.
Rangers fans reacted to Commons’ comments on Twitter, hammering the former Celtic star. Many believe that Gerrard’s usage of Stewart is spot on, and that Commons has got the wrong end of the stick.
