Rangers exit may prove as inspiration for Celtic youngster after Bundesliga link

David Bates has impressed in Germany since joining Bundesliga 2 side Hamburger SV on a free transfer from Rangers – and could Celtic defender Liam Morrison use that as inspiration?

Bates, 22, has become a regular in Hamburg’s side since his move from Rangers. His form has also seen him regularly called up to Scotland’s senior side during Alex McLeish’s short-lived reign.

He has turned out for Hamburg’s side 27 times in all competitions this season, starring at the back with plenty of aerial prowess and ability on the deck. ‘Ginger Ramos’ has certainly gone beyond expectations.

Bates may no longer be the only Scottish centre-back in German football. That is because Celtic 16-year-old Liam Morrison is being eyed by Bundesliga outfit Hoffenheim.

Celtic are desperate to keep the Scotland Under-17 international, who is regarded as the best centre-back talent of his age group in Scottish football right now. But his head will surely be turned by the Bundesliga.

Jadon Sancho left Manchester City to shine at Borussia Dortmund, while Everton’s Ademola Lookman rejuvenated his spell at Goodison Park with a loan spell at RB Leipzig last season.

Plenty of young British stars are opting to move to Germany. Bates is just another example – but as a centre-back and a young Scottish star, he could prove to be an inspiration for Morrison.

The latter is being advised by former Celtic scout David Moss, who has since become an agent. If Moss is looking to take Morrison to Germany, he will surely use Bates as an example to show what could happen.

Bates may prove to be a reason for a move to Hoffenheim for Morrison, then.
