Rangers defender George Edmundson impresses supporters during loan debut

Wayne Rooney was forced to hand on-loan Rangers defender George Edmundson his Derby County debut on Tuesday night, albeit from the substitutes bench – and Derby fans have applauded the powerhouse for his efforts.

Edmundson, 23, endured a tricky spell at Rangers having joined the Gers in the summer of 2019 from Oldham Athletic. But he managed just 16 appearances for Steven Gerrard’s side, and has since left the club on loan.

Rangers brought in Jack Simpson in January from Bournemouth having already agreed a pre-contract arrangement, allowing Edmundson to move. On Tuesday night, he was handed his debut during a 2-1 win over Wycombe.

Starting on the bench, Edmundson got the call just before half-time after Matt Clarke injured both his hip and eye. Derby went 1-0 up through an Uche Ikpeazu own goal, a player Rangers fans will know from his time at Hearts.

Ikpeazu equalised from the penalty spot, but having brought on ex-Celtic loanee Patrick Roberts on 68 minutes – Derby finally got the winner in the 94th minute to secure a crucial three points. Edmundson did well.

Derby supporters took to Twitter to applaud their new signing for his debut, with many impressed at how defensively solid he looked despite it being his first appearance for the Rams – and also his first in the Championship.
