Rangers deal for Martin Skrtel was ‘impossible’ in summer and situation is surely the same

Recent reports have suggested Rangers remain interested in bringing former Liverpool defender Martin Skrtel to Ibrox. The Slovakian was heavily linked with a move to Glasgow in the summer. His previous working relationship with Steven Gerrard at Liverpool seemed to be one of the key reasons behind the interest.

hoping to take advantage of his club Fenerbahce’s poor recent form. He is out of contract in the summer and the hope is he would be a lot cheaper than in the summer.

However, based on the reports from the summer, a move to Rangers still looks very unlikely. Skrtel’s in the summer that the deal was ‘impossible’ due to funding. The report made it clear, Rangers could not afford his massive £60k-a-week wages.

That has surely not changed.

Rangers have in fact filled the wage bill since then. Four new centre-backs arrived in the form of Conor Goldson, Nikola Katic, Joe Worrall and Gareth McAuley. Simply put, Rangers are well stocked at centre-back, even if Skrtel is a better option.

With centre-backs aplenty and Rangers not likely to go anywhere near those mammoth wages, this deal surely remains impossible.
