Rangers and Celtic reportedly doing battle for Englishman, but Gerrard needs him more

Rangers and Celtic are reportedly doing battle for Charlton Athletic star Joe Aribo as the young Englishman’s contract expires this summer – but surely Steven Gerrard needs him more.

that both Old Firm sides want to take the midfielder north of the border, but they do face competition from English teams. Southampton are also said to be keen.

that Arsenal and Manchester City want to land Aribo – though English sides will have to pay compensation for the 22-year-old maestro.

Aribo has been on fire for Charlton. Playing both defensively and attacking from midfield, Aribo has scored 10 goals and created five more for Lee Bowyer’s side this season.

His latest goal came against Doncaster Rovers in the play-off semi-final, and the midfielder will be hoping to do the same on Friday night when the second leg comes around at the Valley.

Aribo’s ability to score from deep is somewhat missing in Rangers side. The likes of Ross McCrorie, Ryan Jack and Glen Kamara are not known for their goalscoring. It is something a man like Gerrard will want to add.

Gerrard was renowned for it at Liverpool, but he lacks that player who can pop up with 10-15 goals a season from central midfield. Scott Arfield has done that, but he is more of a number 10 – and has even been playing out wide.

Celtic, meanwhile, boast them aplenty. Tom Rogic can do it, as can Olivier Ntcham while Callum McGregor has had a hand in 21 goals this season – scoring six and laying on 15 assists.

Rangers need a goalscoring midfielder more than Celtic do, and that has got to convince Gerrard to win the race for the excellent Englishman. If Charlton gain promotion, though, there is a chance he could sign a new deal.
