Rangers and Celtic fans react as clubs discover Europa League group opponents

Rangers and Celtic fans have taken to Twitter after discovering their Europa League group stage opponents on Friday morning.

The Gers booked their place on Thursday night, despite a below-par 0-0 draw against Armenian side Alashkert. They go through 1-0 on aggregate.

It comes after the Gers were struck by a number of positive tests, that saw their two first-choice goalkeepers and Steven Gerrard forced to stay home.

Meanwhile, Celtic have also qualified for the group stages – despite losing on Thursday to AZ Alkmaar. A 2-0 first-leg win saved Celtic.

They lost 2-1 on the night, but won 3-2 on aggregate with AZ missing some sizeable chances. Both sides learned their fate on Friday morning.

What are Rangers and Celtic fans saying about Europa League draw?

Both Glasgow sides were included in Pot B, and it is fair to say Celtic probably have the tougher draw. Bayer Leverkusen will face the Hoops.

Leverkusen, of course, faced Rangers in the 2019-20 round of 16 – with the Gers losing over two legs. Celtic also face Real Betis and Ferencvaros.

Meanwhile, Rangers have a slightly easier draw on the face of it. Struggling French side Lyon are the most-notable of Rangers’ opponents.

It will see ex-Celtic striker Moussa Dembele take on Rangers. The Gers have also drawn Sparta Prague and Danish side Brondby.

Both sides will do well to break into the knockout stages after Christmas. Here is what Celtic and Rangers fans thought of the Europa League draw.
