Ralph Hasenhuttl reacts to Patrick Bamford display in Leeds win

Ralph Hasenhuttl has labelled Patrick Bamford ‘fantastic’  after the Leeds United striker broke the deadlock against Southampton for a second time this season on Tuesday.

Bamford found the bottom corner at the start of the second-half to set Leeds on their way to a 3-0 win at Elland Road earlier this term.

And history ended up repeating itself somewhat this week as the pair met at St Mary’s. It was Bamford who got the opening goal on the south coast, managing to squeeze the ball past Alex McCarthy from a tight angle.

McCarthy appeared to have an opportunity to get to the ball first. And after the game, Hasenhuttl admitted that the goalkeeper could have done better, before praising the Leeds star.

“He can come earlier for this ball and he can block him better,” . “But he did before a good job I think. He’s a little bit unlucky as I said.

“In the last game we also conceded the first goal from Bamford, he is fantastic up front. He’s had a fantastic season and this was maybe the difference today.”

Bamford will be sad to see the back of this season. He has now scored 16 goals in the Premier League – matching his tally across 45 league games in the Championship last year.

What has been particularly impressive is that he has not let spells without a goal get to him.

Heading into the clash with Spurs earlier this month, Bamford had scored once since the win over Southampton. However, he now has two in his last three and is leaving Gareth Southgate with a real headache ahead of the summer.
