Rafa Benitez reacts on Twitter as Liverpool crowned Premier League champions

Liverpool legend Rafa Benitez has paid tribute to Jurgen Klopp’s side on Twitter on Thursday evening after the Reds were crowned Premier League champions – following Chelsea’s 2-1 win over Manchester City.

The Reds were made to wait in their pursuit of ending a 30-year wait for a top-tier title – as the global health crisis prevented Klopp’s side from getting their hands on the Premier League trophy.

But with football returning this month, Liverpool have now been crowned champions. Their 4-0 win over Crystal Palace on Wednesday night meant Pep Guardiola’s City had to beat Chelsea to keep their mathematical hopes alive.

Christian Pulisic gave Chelsea the lead during the first half, only for Kevin De Bruyne to score a sublime free-kick in the second 45. But with City chasing a winner, Fernandinho handled on the line and Willian scored.

Benitez came close to ending that long-winded search for Premier League glory during his time at Liverpool, but he failed to find success in the league – proving much more profitable in Europe.

Currently in charge of Chinese Super League side Dalian Yifang, Benitez clocked up a huge 350 matches as Reds boss and he remains an icon on Merseyside. He congratulated his old side, in a message to supporters.
