‘Quality’… Tottenham want to sign £47m player who Nuno Espirito Santo says is so talented

Tottenham Hotspur have been linked with a surprise move for former Wolves midfielder Ruben Neves ahead of the January window.

claimed on Wednesday that Spurs have added the Al Hilal midfielder to their list of January targets.

The Portuguese star only completed a switch to the Middle East over the summer as he left Molineux for a fee worth .

Tottenham could be in the market for a new midfielder given James Maddison’s recent injury and doubts over Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg’s future.

And if Spurs do firm up their interest in Ruben Neves, it’s fair to say their former boss Nuno Espirito Santo is likely to be a fan of the move.

Nuno says Neves is a ‘quality’ player

Espirito Santo’s reign at Spurs was short-lived, to say the least, as he was sacked after just four months in charge. But the Portuguese boss did enjoy a successful spell at Wolves beforehand, where he guided the Midlands club into Europe after winning the Championship.

One player who was key to his success at Molineux was Neves.

The midfielder established himself as a standout performer in the Premier League under Espirito Santo’s guidance.

One of Neves’ most memorable moments in a Wolves shirt was a stunning free-kick he netted against Arsenal back in April 2019. And Espirito Santo lauded the Portuguese star after the game.

“He has quality and talent,” he told Wolves’ website.

“He practises and there’s a lot of repetition in the movement of the ball. It really helped us to break the game. It put us in a good momentum.”

Neves has proven he can operate at a high level in the Premier League and would provide quality depth in the middle of the park for Spurs.

He would represent a decent option for Postecoglou should he decide to move Hojbjerg on.

But Tottenham are likely to have more pressing concerns in January as they look to add some much-needed depth at centre-back.
