Pundit says he thought £17m Tottenham player would be a liability

Shaka Hislop has admitted that he thought that Guglielmo Vicario was going to be a liability for Tottenham Hotspur after the first couple of games of the season, but insisted that he could not have been more wrong.

Hislop was speaking on after Spurs beat Fulham 2-0 to move two points clear at the top of the Premier League table.

Tottenham were largely comfortable. But they were relying on Guglielmo Vicario to make a couple of big saves, in particular, the stop to deny Joao Palhinha in the first 11 minutes when the game was goalless.

Vicario may have seemed like a risky signing to many Tottenham fans over the summer. He had not had a huge amount of experience of playing at the highest level before his move. And of course, Spurs were looking to replace a club legend in Hugo Lloris.

But he has proved to be a revelation in the opening months of the season. Certainly, Shaka Hislop has conceded that he cannot believe quite how good Vicario has been for Spurs.

“I’ll be honest, the first couple of games he looked a little bit nervy. I thought he very well may have been a liability,” he told .

“I couldn’t be any more wrong, especially on today’s evidence. He made a save at 0-0 that was simply outstanding. He then made a second at 2-0 that again, was just simply incredible. As a goalkeeper, I am seeing his confidence bloom during the course of the season.”

Pundit won’t be the only one to apologise to Spurs goalkeeper

In terms of value for money, Vicario has to be right up there for the signings of the summer across the Premier League. As reported by Sky Sports, Tottenham paid just over to bring him in from Empoli.

That is proving to be a bargain at this point. He still makes mistakes. There were a couple of nervy moments in the 2-0 victory against Marco Silva’s men. But that is how Ange Postecoglou wants his team to play.

He does not let the slight errors impact his game. And Tottenham appear to have found an inspired replacement for Lloris.

Hislop definitely will not be the only one who has to hold his hands up when it comes to writing Vicario off.
