Gabby Agbonlahor that it was poor from Connor Goldson for the goal Rangers conceded in the Europa League final, insisting that the Ibrox stalwart made a big mistake letting the cross get past him.
Rangers produced one more brilliant effort in the Europa League this season. Unfortunately, the lottery of penalties denied them the chance to get their hands on the trophy.
Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s men took the lead in Sevilla thanks to Joe Aribo. But Eintracht Frankfurt struck back 12 minutes later, with Rafael Borre tucking the ball past Allan McGregor.
Borre managed to get in front of Calvin Bassey to get onto the end of a Filip Kostic cross. Perhaps there could be criticism of Bassey for losing the forward. And it did appear that Kostic found it too easy to get a cross in.
But it did appear that Goldson did nowhere near enough to deal with the ball. Perhaps he was worried about scoring an own goal or expected Bassey to deal with it. But the centre-back seemed to let the ball run past him.
And Agbonlahor has suggested that he would point the finger of blame at Goldson.
“Goldson’s got to cover the near post. I was confused,” . “You’ve got to cover the front post, Goldson just lets it go and thinks Bassey will clear it.
“But Bassey’s thinking: ‘you’re in front of me, you’ve got to cover that near post’. Goldson just stood there and did nothing. For me, it was poor defending from him.”

Goldson has been an incredible signing for Rangers. He has played 60 times this season. And he has made over 220 appearances for the Gers since his move to Ibrox.
He did as much as anyone to take Rangers to the final. So it would be unfair to be too critical.
Unfortunately, in a final, the smallest mistakes can be decisive. Scott Wright will think he could have done more to stop Kostic’s cross coming in. Bassey – who was unbelievable on the night – will rue letting Borre get in front of him. And Goldson will wish, in hindsight, he tried to cut the cross out.
