Pundit says £50m Aston Villa man was ‘outstanding’ despite 4-1 Tottenham defeat

Aston Villa ended up being hammered by Tottenham Hotspur but there was at least some solace for a few individuals in the Villa ranks.

Villa actually took the lead at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium through Morgan Rogers but collapsed in the second half as Spurs sprung into life.

Dominic Solanke equalled a record set by Rafael van der Vaart by scoring twice while another couple from Brennan Johnson and James Maddison added to Villa’s woes.

For Unai Emery, it was very much a shock result and one he didn’t see coming.

However, while Villa will go away and assess a poor second half, the first-half was actually good to watch and one player in particular caught the eye.

Amadou Onana wins praise despite Aston Villa’s defeat at Tottenham

Commenting on the performance for the , former Brighton and Crystal Palace striker Glenn Murray was full of praise for Onana’s performance.

“Amadou Onana has been outstanding. The way he reads the game and he understands he has to cover his full-backs,” Murray said.

“When he gets on the ball he always finds a Aston Villa shirt, he has been exceptional.”

Onana showing Villa were right to spend big on him

Aston Villa paid around to land Onana from Everton in the summer and there’s no doubt he’s already showing why they brought him in.

The Belgian clearly has an abundance of quality to his game, both defensively and in the final third.

As Murray says here, Onana showed a defensive intelligence in his game today and then when it was time to play, he had no trouble in doing so.

Right now, Onana looks like a fine signing by Villa and over the course of his contract, that £50m fee should prove a snip.
