Pundit names four Manchester United players who were great against Liverpool yesterday

Don Hutchison has named the four Manchester United players who really impressed him in their dramatic FA Cup win over Liverpool on Sunday.

Erik ten Hag’s side surprised many by booking their ticket to Wembley where they will face Coventry City for a place in the final. And they got there by playing their part in one of the games of the season.

Manchester United took the lead through Scott McTominay. However, they needed a late Antony equaliser to force extra-time.

They fell behind again in the first 15 minute period. But goals from Marcus Rashford and Amad Diallo sent Old Trafford into a frenzy and Manchester United into the last four of the competition.

Alejandro Garnacho impressed once again for Manchester United. Meanwhile, Kobbie Mainoo‘s stock continues to rise over the course of the campaign.

And speaking to , former Liverpool midfielder Don Hutchison suggested that four Manchester United players really stood out to him during the game.

“I thought Rashford had a good game, a guy that’s been under pressure. Kobbie Mainoo, I thought, was really, really good in spells when he’s got the ball at his feet. So mature for a young lad. Scott McTominay, I’m a massive fan of. I think he plays the position very well,” he said.

“But it was a performance that Man United have lacked all season, in terms of heart. And they had to dig deep. They were 2-1 down with three minutes to go. Liverpool should have buried the game. But Man United refused to go away. So that’s character, that’s heart, we’ve not seen it enough. Then they were 3-2 down and they had enough character to come back to 3-3 and 4-3. But that won’t sway the fanbase, that one win when they wake up tomorrow morning and they analyse, yes Man United have gone through.

“It’s not sour grapes from me. I don’t think Man United won the game. I thought Liverpool threw it away. But in terms of a couple individual performances, Kobbie Mainoo, Scott McTominay and Rashford, I thought they were great. And Garnacho by the way. Super player.”

Potential turning point

It had been getting harder to argue that ten Hag was taking this Manchester United team forward as the campaign was going on. They have fallen backwards in the Premier League.

Some have previously suggested that they would be surprised to see ten Hag still at Manchester United next season. But perhaps this FA Cup win could prove to be the turning point.

Of course, there are still big problems to address. And the jury will probably remain out on the Dutchman. But there are some brighter signs – particularly with their younger players stepping up when the side needed them.
