Pundit has spotted two worrying signs about Tottenham No.10 James Maddison

James Maddison has become something of an enigma at Tottenham.

The England international blew Spurs fa𝓡ns away wit𓆏h his start to life in N17 last season – following a £40m move from Leicester in June 2023 – scoring two goals and providing two assists in his first four Premier League appearances as a Tottenham player.

However, the 27-year-old then scored just two goals in his next 24 P༒remier League games for Spurs, form which saw the Tottenham No.10 miss out on a place in Gareth Southgate’s England squad for UEFA Euro 2024.

Now, Danny Murphy has commented on two things James Maddison needs to improve on at Tottenham

What Danny Murphy has noticed about James Maddison at Tottenham

The 47-year-old has now claimed that the man from Coventr🅘y needs to work on his durability and defensive awareness under Ange Postecoglou.

Sp🐷eaking on talkSPORT at 9:14pm on Tuesday night, Murphy :ꦚ “He is a phenomenal footballer, super intelligent, great balance, can open you up with his passing, can score a goal. Maddison, where he has got to improve to become a Tottenham superstar and actually be the difference in big games, is two things. One is his durability, staying clear of injuries and also coming off in games. Very rarely lasts 90 minutes, Maddison. Maybe it is a physical thing, maybe it’s a mental thing, who knows, but he has got to get better at that.

“The other thing I would suggest he needs to improve on a little bit is his defensive work, because when you play as a No.10 in a three, you have got ๊to do your defensive work.”

Maddison only completed 90 minꦐutes in six of his 28 Premier League appearances last season.

Spurs No.10 may be sweating

Not only does Maddison need to rediscov♍er his form from the start of last season, but Postecoglou has since added competiti🍬on for the England international in midfield.

Lucas Bergvall has now settled in at Tottenh🍌am, and the Sweden international ♓looks to be an immense talent.

Heung-min Son has ev🔯en singled Bergvall out for praise, while Alasdair Gold believes Tot🌠tenham did not actually expect the Swede to be this effective so soon.

Archie Gray has also arrived in a £30m move from Leeds, and while Maddison is an attacking midfielder by trade, 🍸he does like to drop deeper and occupy similar areas to Bergvall and the England U21 international.

Therefore, if the £40m man cannot reestablish himself as a leading figure at Tott☂enham, he might be for🍌ced to make way and spend some time on the bench.
