Pundit claims 28-year-old Tottenham star is technically one of the Premier League’s worst players
Jay Bothroyd has not held back in his criticism of one Tottenham Hotspur player after their defeat to Newcastle United at the weekend, insisting that he is, technically, one of the worst players in the Premier League.
Spurs’ loss to the Magpies on Saturday has raised plenty of questions Ange Postecoglou may want to try and answer over the coming weeks.
It has been a much more difficult second-half of the season for Tottenham. They flew out of the blocks at the start of the campaign. But teams have potentially found ways to play against them and have some joy.
What was surprising about Saturday was Tottenham not finding the back of the net. Newcastle have been depleted by injury. And Spurs have a lot of depth in the final third.
But James Maddison looked frustrated against Newcastle. And another of their attacking players has now been heavily criticised by Jay Bothroyd.
Jay Bothroyd says Tottenham player is one of the worst technically in the Premier League
Speaking on , Bothroyd outlined just how disappointed he has been by one player in the Tottenham ranks since January.
“I can’t help, but I have to be critical of Timo Werner. I’m sorry, he misses so many good chances. And those chances that he missed, they can change games,” he said.
“Technically, he’s one of the worst players in the Premier League. I’m going to say that, because I honestly believe that.

“He doesn’t cross the ball well, he hits it as hard as he can across the face of the goal all the time. He never picks anybody out. His finishing’s poor. His passing’s poor.
“And yes, you can say that he’s effective. But then I’m saying, okay, he’s an athlete. In this day and age, I look at him and I say he’s effective because of his athleticism. As he gets older and he loses that athleticism, how effective is he going to be then?”
Spurs would have been under no illusions after superb January deal
It is a bit strong from Bothroyd. And you can definitely understand why Tottenham have signed Werner on loan.
Ultimately, he has provided two goals and three assists in the Premier League since his arrival. And he has the pace to cause real problems. Roy Keane said that Werner would be a nuisance to face.
Few Spurs fans ever expected Werner to transform their attack. The reason he was available on loan was the fact that he was struggling for minutes with RB Leipzig.
It feels like a low-risk move to keep him beyond the loan spell. But you know that there are going to be times when he frustrates fans with the shortcomings with his end product.
It definitely seems a bit unfair from Bothroyd to make such a strong claim about Werner. But if Tottenham are going to take that next step next season, they are going to need players such as Werner to improve considerably.
