‘Proud’… Curtis Jones and Harvey Elliott rally behind Liverpool teammate

As one of the biggest clubs in the world, Liverpool had a lot of representation at Euro 2024 and the Copa America over the past few weeks.

Indeed, the Reds still have four players in the running, and at least one is guaranteed to return to Kirkby with a winner’s medal.

Trent Alexander-Arnold and Joe Gomez are in the England squad that reached the Euro 2024 final, where they will face Spain.

Meanwhile, Alexis Mac Allister’s Argentina will go up against Luis Diaz’s Colombia in the Copa America final a few hours later.

However, some Liverpool players have also been left disappointed after being knocked out at the semi-final stage.

For instance, three Reds players – Virgil van Dijk, Cody Gakpo and Ryan Gravenberch – were on the losing side in their meeting with England.

The Netherlands took the lead against the Three Lions, through a superb Xavi Simons strike early on.

However, they were pegged back by a Harry Kane penalty, before Ollie Watkins struck late on to break Oranje hearts.

Curtis Jones and Harvey Elliott console Liverpool teammate Cody Gakpo

On Thursday, Gakpo took to Instagram with a heartfelt message in wake of his nation’s semi-final defeat.

“It has been an honor to play for my country at this level and to have made it this far,” he wrote.

“Bringing the EURO cup home would have been a childhood dream come true, but it wasn’t meant to be in this tournament.

“I am grateful for the whole team, from the players to the staff, who put so much effort and work into this.

“And last but not least, to the supporters: thank all for this journey and the amazing memories. This was a special one.”

Plenty of Gakpo’s peers rallied behind him. For instance, Curtis Jones wrote “head up brother, you can be proud”, while Harvey Elliott wrote “should be proud of yourself brother”.

Gakpo one of Netherlands’ top players at Euro 2024

Although Gakpo’s Euro 2024 adventure sadly didn’t culminate in silverware, he was one of his nation’s best players, with three goals and one assist to his name.

The 25-year-old will hopefully build on his heroics at the tournament in years to come, but first, there’s the opportunity of a fresh start under fellow Dutchman Arne Slot at Anfield.

Liverpool will be hoping for Slot to hit the ground running, and hopefully there will be some exciting reinforcements coming through.

For instance, one report recently claimed that Slot has made contact with a player deemed the ‘best midfielder in Europe’ over joining Liverpool.
