‘Prime Messi’: Some Liverpool fans hail Joel Matip display v Aston Villa
A number of Liverpool fans have waxed lyrical about Joel Matip’s performance for the Reds at Anfield on Saturday.
The 30-year-old defender put in an impressive display as Jurgen Klopp’s charges beat Aston Villa 1-0.
Matip was, as usual, solid in defence, weighing in with numerous interceptions and clearances.

He also made key passes, boasted superb passing accuracy, and had an effort on target.
And as is sometimes the case, Matip went off on an “adventure” in the second half – surging up the pitch from his own half and making it right to the opposition area.
Plenty of Liverpool fans loved what they saw and hailed him on Twitter:

Amazing to think that Liverpool didn’t pay a penny for Matip – he joined the Reds on a free transfer in 2016.
And what a player he has been for Jurgen Klopp’s side.
Matip is a fan favourite at Anfield not only for his defensive heroics, but for his efforts further up the pitch too.
Liverpool triumph once again
The Reds are flying high and, on Saturday, saw off Steven Gerrard’s side thanks to Mohamed Salah’s 67th-minute penalty.
Liverpool had to work hard for their win, and the tension at Anfield was palpable prior to Salah’s goal.
There was a tense moment involving Matip and Alisson late on which saw the goalkeeper hammer a clearance against the defender.
However, replays appeared to show Danny Ings push Matip into the path of Alisson’s clearance.
Nonetheless, it came to nothing, and Liverpool were able to celebrate another victory come full time.
