With the attentions of both Liverpool and Manchester City elsewhere this weekend; and the pair in fact meeting in the league on Wednesday night, 16 sides took to the field in the Premier League and there was just as much excitement as ever. Leicester City had the advantage of playing their game against Norwich in an untelevised arena and in a manner similar to their efforts for much of the early part of the season, they were able to go under the radar. The Canaries were able to stifle much of the cut-throat counter-attacking play that The Foxes have been famous for this campaign but a late winner from Leonardo Ulloa earned them all three points to increase the gap over two of their title rivals who would not play until Sunday.
Arsenal headed to Old Trafford as bookies’ favourites for the first time in the Premier League era and with Manchester United’s injury-plagued side standing against them, it was clear to see why. After a slow-paced start, LVG’s side started to assert some dominance on the game and Marcus Rashford; who shot to fame in mid-week against FC Midtjylland, made his mark on an even bigger stage. A quick-fire brace from the local youngster put the home team into the ascendancy but a seed of doubt was placed in their minds when their former player Danny Welbeck nodded home just before half-time. Rashford was on hand to lay the ball off to Ander Herrera just after the hour mark and a fine finish appeared to give United some much-needed breathing space, but an almost immediate reply through Mesut Özil kept them honest until the very end, eventually seeing the game out for an excellent 3-2 victory. As a result of Leicester’s 1-0 win on Saturday, The Gunners now find themselves five points behind the league leaders with a tough series of fixtures on the horizon.
Fresh from their superb progression into the next round of the Europa League on Thursday night, Spurs were looking to maintain an unprecedented title push in the Premier League with a very winnable fixture at home to Swansea City. Despite this, The Swans found themselves in the lead with the game less than 20 minutes old through Paloschi. It took Pochettino’s men until the 70th minute to get back on level terms and then rode the crest of the wave to go on to secure all three points. This was essential given Leicester City’s result earlier in the weekend and once more, Spurs demonstrated the kind of desire that is an ingredient of every title winner.
