Premier League rivals emerge as favourites to sign Martin Dubravka with Newcastle talks ‘progressing well’

Newcastle United look set to allow reserve goalkeeper Martin Dubravka to leave the club for one of their Premier League rivals in a permanent move.

Former Newcastle number one, Martin Dubravka, has fallen down the pecking order at St James’ Park, with the majority of his first-team appearances in the last Premier League season coming when Nick Pope was injured.

Now, the 36-year-old Slovakian international looks set to leave Newcastle, ending his seven-year stay on Tyneside after joining in 2018 on an initial loan deal.

Eddie Howe has been in the market for a goalkeeper this summer and brought in Aaron Ramsdale from Arsenal after missing out on Manchester City-bound James Trafford.

Ramsdale’s arrival means that Dubravka is now surplus to requirements, and he looks set to join a Premier League rival to end his time at St James’ Park.

Martin Dubravka set to leave Newcastle United

According to a report on Good Morning Transfers on Sky Sports News on the fourth of August, Dubravka is nearing a move to Burnley.

Burnley are looking to replace Trafford with an experienced shot-stopper, and talks are “progressing well” with Newcastle. The report states: “Martin Dubravka has emerged as a primary target for Burnley. So he’d be staying in the Premier League.

“We’re told that talks with Newcastle are understood to be progressing well over a permanent deal. Dubravka is in the last year of his contract at Newcastle. Now, why do Burnley want a goalkeeper?

“Because they lost James Trafford, who could have gone to Newcastle, but instead chose to go to Manchester City last week. So, Burnley are trying to replace Trafford with Dubravka from Newcastle, and talks are progressing”

What will Martin Dubravka bring to Burnley?

Dubravka is a vastly experienced goalkeeper who has made over 400 first-team appearances in his long career.

At 1.91 metres tall, or six feet and three inches, he is an imposing presence and is a strong shot-stopper, as he has demonstrated during his time at Newcastle.

Martin Dubravka – Key Facts

Dubravka quickly became a fan favourite at the club, winning the North East Football Writers’ Association Player of the Year for 2018 before lifting the club’s Player of the Year award in the 2019/20 season.

Whilst he has struggled for game time since the arrival of Pope, he remains a consistent and experienced performer who will be a perfect short-term replacement for the departing Trafford.
