Predicted Newcastle side to face Sheffield United: Three changes, January signing starts

Steve Bruce has a number of decisions to make to his Newcastle United side as he prepares for the Toon’s return with a difficult clash against Chris Wilder’s high-flying Sheffield United – and here is Bruce’s predicted line-up.

Newcastle welcome the Blades to St. James’ Park as they get ready for their first competitive match in more than three months. Sheffield United have already played, after drawing 0-0 with Aston Villa on Wednesday evening.

The Toon come into the match in decent form, having beaten Southampton away from home and qualified for the sixth round of the FA Cup with a win over Championship side West Bromwich Albion.

Matt Ritchie started the last game, a 1-0 win over Southampton. But he has since been ruled out by Bruce from featuring on Sunday, as have Dwight Gayle and Matty Longstaff – who has been offered a contract, but is yet to accept.

January recruit Valentino Lazaro, 24, replaced Ritchie during the clash against Southampton and the Austria international is likely to receive just his third start in place of the former Bournemouth man. Two other changes are likely.

With Gayle sidelined, Joelinton is likely to come back into the fold while Fabian Schar could start ahead of Federico Fernandez in defence. We reckon that Newcastle will make three changes – Joelinton, Schar and Lazaro in for Gayle, Fernandez and Ritchie.
