‘Potentially’…Postecoglou now says he could use £21.5m Spurs player in a new position against Aston Villa

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou has been discussing things ahead of the clash with Aston Villa this weekend.

The Spurs boss is looking for his team to bounce back after a disappointing spell before the international break, both in terms of results and injuries.

Two defeats for Spurs have left them wondering what’s hit them, while a number of big injuries to the likes of James Maddison and Micky van de Ven have also rocked the club.

In midfield, there are further issues with Yves Bissouma absent this weekend, while Pape Sarr is also going to miss out.

However, Postecoglou has told that he believes Rodrigo Bentancur could fill in for a defensive midfield role if needed.

Postecoglou hints at new midfield role for Rodrigo Bentancur

Speaking in his press conference about the midfield options, Ange was asked about the idea of using Bentancur in a deeper midfield role. And the Spurs boss believes it’s something the Uruguayan can do.

“Yeah, potentially. It’s probably why Marcelo [Bielsa] probably used him like that for Uruguay. He did it really well and he can play there,” Postecoglou .

Tottenham landed Bentancur as part of a and he’s looked a class act in the games he has played. A big injury curtailed his progress but he is now back fit and firing, ready to stake his claim for a first-team place again.

Bentancur has shown during his time with Spurs that he is more than good enough to play in any role in the midfield if needed. His quality on the ball and the fact he always makes it look like he has time on the ball is a big attribute.

Postecoglou, then, should have no qualms in putting Bentancur in this weekend. He was bought for the big games and to make a difference and if that’s in a deeper midfield role, then so be it.
