Potential Aubameyang replacement linked with Arsenal has Charlie Nicholas magic, says former teammate

Reported Arsenal target Odsonne Edouard has been highly praised by Frank McGarvey, who compared the Celtic man to his former teammate, Gunners and Hoops legend Charlie Nicholas.

According to , the Gunners are interested in the highly rated 22-year-old, who has claimed an impressive 60 goals and 31 assists in 126 Hoops appearances.

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta reportedly plans to bolster his ranks this summer amid an uncertain future for the club’s main frontmen, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette.

Edouard has played for Celtic since the summer of 2017, when he initially joined on loan from Paris Saint-Germain, and joined the Bhoys permanently the following year for a club record £9million ().

McGarvey and Nicholas, meanwhile, were strike partners at Celtic before the latter signed for Arsenal in the summer of 1983, and the former feels the Parkhead ace could follow suit in leaving the Glasgow club.

“I just love watching Edouard. He has that bit of magic in his feet, and he reminds me of Charlie Nicholas,” McGarvey told the . “You just know if he gets the ball just outside of the box the other team are in trouble.

“Edouard has that ability to produce something out of nothing because he has such quick feet. I think someone will come in this summer and put £20million on the table for him.

“You can’t blame Celtic for taking it, especially in the current climate. I’ll be sorry to see him go because he is an outstanding footballer. His temperament and his ability are genuinely top class.”

Charlie Nicholas is fondly remembered for his time at Celtic and Arsenal, being named at number 28 in the club’s “” list.

A player with artistry and personality, Nicholas served up plenty of flair and flamboyance at Highbury and ended the Gunners’ eight-year trophy drought with a brace in the 1987 League Cup final, a 2-1 win over Liverpool.

For McGarvey to compare his former Hoops teammate to Edouard is quite a compliment and, given Arsenal are once again in need of bringing back the good times, who knows whether the France Under-21 star could do just that?
