Potential £70m Skriniar signing could pave way for Cahill’s Aston Villa return

Chelsea have joined the race to sign Inter Milan defender Milan Skriniar, according to reports.

Chelsea will rival Manchester United for Skriniar, who is rated at £70m by his club.

That is a hefty price for the 23-year-old but Maurizio Sarri could see him as a long-term investment.

But if Chelsea sign the Slovakia international, where does that leave Andreas Christensen and Gary Cahill?

David Luiz and Antonio Rudiger are the preferred central defensive options at Stamford Bridge.

And one or both of Christensen and Cahill could leave in January if Skriniar arrives.

This could prompt a transfer merry-go-round which sees Aston Villa launch an optimistic bid to bring Cahill back to Villa Park.

and could rejoin his first ever club.

Cahill played 31 games for Aston Villa before sealing a move to Bolton Wanderers and then joining Chelsea.

The former England international has had an illustrious career, winning many trophies and earning 61 caps for the Three Lions.

This experience would be ideal for Aston Villa, who are light at the back and need reinforcements in January.

With John Terry on the coaching staff, Aston Villa might hold a trump card in this race as Cahill could consider teaming up with his former Chelsea centre-back partner.

And a fairy-tale return to where it all began might also convince the 6ft 4in defender to drop down a division.
