Port Vale: Fourth signing confirmed; goalkeeper could leave; midfielder’s future uncertain
Port Vale have signed young defender Scott Tanser from Rochdale on a short-term deal until the end of the season.
The 22-year-old, who plays predominantly as a left-back, is the fourth new addition at Vale Park during the January transfer window as caretaker manager Michael Brown continues to re-shuffled his playing squad.
reveals that Tanser has previously been a youth team player at Burnley and Blackpool but made his first steps into professional football with Rochdale in 2013. He had made a total of 59 appearances for Dale but has found first-team opportunities limited this season having featured just nine times.
Brown has also secured the services of Chris Eagles (short-term deal), Tyler Walker (on loan) and Callum Guy (on loan) in recent weeks since being placed in temporary control following the departure of Bruno Ribiero in December. Meanwhile, the are one of multiple English media outlets reporting that Port Vale goalkeeper Jak Alnwick is being targeted by Scottish giants Glasgow Rangers.
The 23-year-old has been a regular feature at Vale Park since arriving in North Staffordshire in August 2015 and has received praise for his consistent high-quality performances in League One. This has attracted the interest of Rangers who are lining up potential replacements for Matt Gilks who is expected to sign for Wigan Athletic before the transfer window closes.
Reports suggest that the Scottish outfit have made an offer in the region of £250,000 for Alnwick, although the payments are split into small monthly installments rather than one lump sum. However, Port Vale chairman Norman Smurthwaite has denied claims that the offer matches a release clause in the goalkeeper’s contract or that any deal is assured.
In other news, former England international Chris Kirkland has started a short-term coaching role at Port Vale after the 35-year-old announced his retirement as a player at the start of the season.
The are reporting that Kirkland is currently working with the first team goalkeepers at the League One outfit after being brought in by caretaker manager Michael Brown. The pair were former team-mates at Wigan Athletic and Brown will be hoping that the latest addition to his backroom staff can pass on some of his expertise to Vale’s current crop of ‘keepers.
Kirkland has accumulated a vast amount of playing experience having spent the last fifteen years playing for Coventry City, Liverpool, West Bromwich Albion, Leicester City, Doncaster and Preston North End. He also made one appearance for the England national team in a 4-0 victory against Greece in August 2016.
Michael Brown is still in the process of remolding Port Vale’s backroom team after being appointed as caretaker manager one month ago with Kirkland being the latest addition. Brown was the only member of Bruno Ribeiro’s coaching staff to remain at the club after the Portuguese manager left Vale Park by mutual consent, with the new boss having to use his contacts within the game to pull together a support team. Kirkland joins new assistant manager David Kelly and former goalkeeper Andy Leaning on Port Vale’s coaching staff.
Finally, Port Vale are yet to confirm the future of former Premier League star after the player’s short-term contract expired earlier this month.
The 32-year-old, who has previously represented Newcastle United and Wigan Athletic in the top flight of English football, joined The Valiant’s in October and has been a regular feature in the starting line-up at Vale Park making 15 starts.
The versatile midfielder, who is also comfortable playing as a fullback, scored in his final appearance for the club in the 2-2 draw against Bury to take his tally of goals this season up to four.
Despite caretaker manager Michael Brown confirming that he was keen to extend Taylor’s spell at Vale Park the club have yet to make an announcement on the player’s future.
