Pontus Jansson revels in Marcelo Bielsa’s praise from last season
Pontus Jansson has been discussing his season so far with the press in Sweden and mentioned his former Leeds United boss Marcelo Bielsa in the process.
Jansson was sold by Leeds in the summer. The Swedish cult hero headed to Brentford in a shock move worth a £5.5 million. The exit came amid rumours of a potential rift with Bielsa.
However, there never appeared to be any hard feelings, with Bielsa of the belief Leeds could do better at the back and Jansson going on to help new club Brentford to a promotion challenge of their own.
Indeed, as Jansson the Argentine rated Jansson as one of the best players in the Championship.
“I got a lot of praise last year. Bielsa said I was the best player in the league, the best in his team and my name appeared a lot. This year I have matured partly as a captain but also how I managed the team.”
Those comments are certainly true. “Jansson left, everyone knows. Jansson was the best player last season,”
Whilst there is no doubt that Jansson is one of the Championship’s better centre-backs, it seems that Leeds United’s boss Bielsa decided he was more trouble than he was worth in the Leeds dressing room. On top of that, his sale was necessary for Leeds to stay balanced regarding FFP regulations.
Indeed, Jansson may be one of the best defenders in the league but many would argue the man who replaced him at Elland Road, Ben White, has in fact been the best this season.
