Pontus Jansson lauds Marcelo Bielsa after promotion

Pontus Jansson has paid tribute to Marcelo Bielsa following Brentford’s play-off final win, that the Leeds United boss is one of the best in the world.

Jansson is finally set to become a Premier League player after two experiences of play-off heartbreak.

The Bees recorded a largely comfortable win over Swansea City at Wembley. They were 2-0 up inside 20 minutes and their opponents rarely looked like getting back into the game.

The result sets up a reunion between Jansson and his former club Leeds.

The Swede was a cult-hero at Elland Road before his surprise departure in 2019.

Bielsa’s men went on to get across the promotion line last season. Jansson’s side however, agonisingly missed out after suffering defeat in the play-off final.

One year later however, and Brentford are now Premier League-bound.

And following the game, Jansson sent a really classy message to his former boss, hinting that he even played a part in the Bees getting themselves to the top flight.

“I’m so thankful to Bielsa and what he gave me at Leeds,” . “He gave me so much knowledge that I actually brought in here to Brentford and Brentford was so willing to listen to me with my ideas, that I took from Bielsa.

“I thank him a lot. Bielsa, for me, is one of the best coaches in the world. People think that mine and his relationship is not the best but it is, it’s very good. I’m so thankful to him.”

It seemed an extremely sad way for Jansson’s time to end when he left Leeds for Griffin Park.

For much of his spell, it appeared inevitable that the 30-year-old would lead Leeds to glory if they were finally going to end their wait for a Premier League return.

With the acquisition of Ben White, Leeds were ultimately vindicated for the controversial decision to let Jansson go.

But many supporters have continued to keep a keen eye out for how Jansson has done.

So they will be delighted to see him secure promotion – and subsequently open up on the impact Bielsa made.
