Pontus Jansson interest presents Leeds United with chance to bring back Sam Byram

Leeds United centre-back Pontus Jansson could be on his way out of the club this summer, according to reports this week. that the Swedish international has emerged as a potential target for David Moyes this summer, as he looks to improve the defensive options at the club.

The report claims that West Ham could even pay a fee of up to £12 million for his services, a fee Leeds would struggle to reject for the player considering his indifferent form this season.

But if Leeds are to lose Jansson to the Hammers, should they try and bring a former player back as part of the deal.

Sam Byram left Leeds for West Ham in January 2016. With the right-sided star failing to agree on a contract extension at Elland Road he was sold to the Hammers for a fee reported to be in the region of £3.7 million.

Byram’s exit irked many Leeds fans, but many others understood that he felt the move was the right decision considering the circumstances. Leeds looked to have little direction under the ownership of Massimo Cellino and a switch to the Premier League side simply made sense.

However, it has not been a successful move for the player. He has struggled to find his best form with the Hammers and has also battled continuous injury trouble.

Bringing Byram, one of Leeds’ better talents of the past few years, back to Elland Road would certainly be a good PR move from new chairman Andrea Radrizzani. If the 24-year-old can keep himself fit he would also represent an excellent buy for Leeds on the pitch.

Losing Jansson need not be a bad thing for Leeds. If they can get a fee of £12 million for the player they will consider that good business. If they can get less, but Byram sent back to West Yorkshire, then Leeds fans will have little to complain about.
