Player Tottenham released for free last year has just broken a record in the Champions League
Tottenham have released a few players over the years who have gone on to kick on and reignite their careers.
Paolo Gazzaniga has been reborn at Girona as a Champions League level goalkeeper, while Eric Dier is having a career second-wind at Bayern Munich.
Last year, Tottenham released a few players. Ryan Sessegnon was let go after Sessegnon had a difficult time at Spurs, while Japhet Tanganga was also released.
Ivan Perisic was another casualty at Spurs, initially loaned to Hajduk Split last January before departing Spurs permanently in the summer.
However, Perisic’s Croatian homecoming didn’t last long as he would soon join PSV Eindhoven on another free transfer.
Perisic was back in a top European league, and he’s now shining for the Dutch side.
Indeed, Perisic has received huge praise this season, and now, at the age of 36, he’s just broken a Champions League record.

Ivan Perisic breaks Champions League record
PSV picked up a remarkable win in the Champions League on Wednesday as they dumped Juventus out of the competition.
Among the goals on the night was Ivan Perisic, netting at the age of 36 years and 17 days.
That goal made Perisic the oldest player ever to score in consecutive Champions League knockout games.
Perisic’s career at the top level appeared to be over 18 months ago as Perisic suffered a terrible injury at Tottenham, but now he’s back and breaking records at the top level.
Champions League oldest goalscoerers
Perisic has broken the record for the oldest player to score in consecutive Champions League knockout games.
However, the left-footer still has some way to go before he can think about breaking the record for the oldest goalscorer in Champions League history.
Oldest goalscorers in Champions League history | Age |
---|---|
1. Pepe | 40y 9 months 17 days |
2. Francesco Totti | 38 |
3. Ryan Giggs | 37 |
4. Sergio Ramos | 37 |
5. Flippo Inzaghi | 37 |
Pepe currently holds the record for the oldest goalscorer in the Champions League, netting at the age of 40.
However, with Perisic keeping himself in such incredible condition, it wouldn’t be a massive shock if the winger is still finding the back of the net in top-level European competition for sometime yet.
Maybe Tottenham were too quick to let Perisic go, as it appears he still has plenty left in the tank.
