Player suggests he has no desire to join Manchester United despite interest from INEOS

Manchester United are not the point of attraction they used to be.

Under Sir Alex Ferguson, the Red Devils rarely experienced rejection in the transfer market, with superstars such as Ruud van Nistelrooy, Wayne Rooney, Robin van Persie, Dimitar Berbatov and Cristiano Ronaldo jumping at the chance to move to Old Trafford.

Now – however – Manchester United sit 12th in the Premier League under Erik ten Hag, and have been described as a “graveyard” for footballers by Gary Neville.

Several talents have stagnated after moving to Old Trafford, such as Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Rasmus Hojlund, Antony and Joshua Zirkzee.

Now, a bright prospect in Alvaro Carreras has suggested he holds no desire to join Manchester United.

The Benfica No.3 only left Old Trafford permanently back in May, after the Portuguese giants activated their £5m option to buy, having initially taken the left-back on loan for the 2023/24 campaign.

However – according to Portuguese news outlets – Manchester United are already keen to bring Carreras back due to his impressive performances at Benfica.

After being asked about these rumours, the 21-year-old told : “I only think about Benfica. I’m only focused here. I’ll try to keep up the same level, try to help the team as much as possible. I’m just another player on the team.”

Liverpool are also monitoring Carreras after his fine start to life in Lisbon – a place where the Reds have already taken Darwin Nunez from.

Alvaro Carreras situation sums Manchester United up

We don’t blame Carreras for showing little enthusiasm over a return to Manchester United – the Red Devils gave up on the Spaniard, and the fact INEOS are already showing a desire to bring him back just sums up the madness at Old Trafford.

There seems to be no connected thinking whatsoever.

For example, the decision to spend £37m on Amad Diallo when he was just 18 – only to then splash close to £90m on the exact same profile of forward in Antony – made little sense.

TBR Football understand Manchester United have told Antony he can leave in January after Amad rose above the Brazilian in the pecking order, which sums it up.

If we could share a piece of advice with Carreras, it would be to avoid Manchester United until INEOS find a way to ensure Old Trafford is no longer a “graveyard” for careers – as Neville put it.
