Player released by Arsenal last year has been compared to Bruno Fernandes

Henrikh Mkhitaryan didn’t exactly have the best time at Arsenal, but he is now very much back to his best at Roma.

The Armenia international was on the Gunners’ books for two-and-a-half years, joining from Manchester United in January 2018.

Mkhitaryan’s arrival was part of a huge swap deal with the Red Devils which saw Alexis Sanchez go in the opposite direction.

As we all know, neither player went on to impress for their respective new teams at the time, to put it mildly.

Indeed, described it as “the worst swap deal in Premier League history”, and pondered whether it was “the most underwhelming swap deal in history”.

Mkhitaryan endured frustrating spells both at Old Trafford and at the Emirates Stadium, clocking up .

The 32-year-old swapped Arsenal for Roma in September 2019, initially on loan and then permanently, with the Gunners terminating his contract by .

Now, Mkhitaryan is once again showing the kind of form that saw him make a name for himself at Shakhtar Donetsk and then Borussia Dortmund.

He has made 25 appearances in all competitions for Roma this season, and registered a staggering 11 goals and 10 assists.

The Giallorossi are in contention for the Scudetto, just six points behind Serie A leaders AC Milan, and are also in the last 32 of the Europa League.

Earlier this week, Roma director Tiago Pinto told : “He is very important to us and not only on the pitch.

“In Europe, (Mkhitaryan) is only behind Bruno Fernandes. He is also an excellent professional. In our project, he can be important for helping the youth players develop.”

Admittedly, things have worked out fine for Arsenal, who now have Emile Smith Rowe and Martin Odegaard vying for the No. 10 role.

However, you can’t help but wonder how a Mkhitaryan firing on all cylinders, as he is doing now, would have fared in the first half of the season, when Arsenal were desperate for creativity.
