Player backs his £46m teammate to star for Arsenal with Mikel Arteta keen to sign him

Mikel Arteta will be keeping a close eye on this week’s UEFA Euro 2024 semi-finals, as a rumoured target for Arsenal is in action.

Reports suggest the Gunners are closely monitoring one of the stars of Spain’s tournament so far.

Now, his teammate has actually backed the player in question to shine for Arsenal – if a move to the Emirates Stadium materialises…

Unai Simon backs Nico Williams to thrive at Arsenal

Spain international Unai Simon has now backed Nico Williams to thrive at Arsenal.

The comments come after boldly claimed that Arteta would like to sign the Athletic Bilbao No.11 more than any other winger this summer.

Tablero Deportivo Simon as saying: “Nico can play wherever he wants and that’s what he’s going to do.

“Well, honestly, I think it’s normal that you hear all these rumours that Nico can go to Barca, that he can go to Chelsea, to Arsenal, it’s normal that you hear that because Nico is a player who right now could play in most teams in the world because of what he is showing in this Euros, because of the growth that Athletic have had this season and because he is very decisive in many situations.”

Make no mistake about it, Williams – who holds a release clause worth £46m in his Athletic Bilbao contract – has arguably been the player of the tournament at UEFA Euro 2024 so far this summer.

The 21-year-old may only have scored one goal and provided one assist in four appearances, but his electrifying performances down the left flank have unsettled many a defender.

Rio Ferdinand even said that he thinks Williams has been the standout player at UEFA Euro 2024 this summer.

Gabriel Martinelli might be feeling concerned

Gabriel Martinelli is one man who may be feeling quite worried about these rumours.

The Brazil international plays in the same position at Williams on the left of attack, and after he scored just six goals in 35 Premier League appearances last season, the South American might feel like he’s being replaced.

Hopefully, if Martinelli is feeling this way, he can channel those emotions into motivation to improve for Arsenal next season, rather than become someone who kicks up a fuss.

Be sure to keep an eye on this situation, as Arsenal could step up a move to sign Williams once Spain’s involvement in UEFA Euro 2024 is over.
