PL manager believes 24-year-old Newcastle target could play at the ‘very highest level’
Brighton & Hove Albion manager Graham Potter believes goalkeeper Robert Sanchez could play at ‘the very highest level’.
The 24-year-old helped the Seagulls damage Arsenal’s Champions League qualification hopes with a 2-1 win at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
The win against Mikel Arteta’s side brought to an end a seven-game winless run which included six straight losses for Potter’s side.
After loan spells with Forest Green Rovers and Rochdale, Sanchez was given his Premier League debut last season and since then the stopper hasn’t looked back.
As well as establishing himself as the number one goalkeeper at the Amex Stadium, Sanchez is firmly part of Luis Enrique’s Spain squad and made his debut for the national team as a substitute in a World Cup qualifier against Georgia in September.
Sanchez will be hoping to secure a place in Enrique’s squad for this winter’s World Cup in Qatar.
It says just as much about Sanchez as it does David de Gea that Brighton’s number one looks to be ahead of the Manchester United goalkeeper in the national side pecking order.
Although Sanchez has a contract on the south coast until 2025, he is beginning to attract admirers both domestically and abroad with Newcastle and Italian giants Juventus among the clubs monitoring his progress, according to the .
However, Potter isn’t paying attention to rumours surrounding Sanchez’s future and he is instead keen to see the goalkeeper continue to develop.
The former Swansea City manager : “I don’t know what headlines he has had but from our perspective it’s quite clear that he has the capability to play at the very, very highest level. He’s got that potential.
“The only thing that’s missing is the games and the experience which playing in the Premier League, especially in front of crowds can really help.
“He’s got the capacity to make world class saves, I’m just delighted for him that he’s been able to make them and help us win a game of football.”
With Newcastle’s Premier League status practically assured, PIF and Eddie Howe will undoubtedly look to bolster the playing squad.
Competition for Martin Dubravka may be sought and Sanchez may find himself the subject of interest from the world’s richest club.
