Philippe Clement could be the key to Club Brugge securing former team-mate Victor Wanyama’s signature
Tottenham Hotspur may have found a buyer for out-of-favour Kenyan midfielder Victor Wanyama. Belgian side Club Brugge have emerged as a potential destination for the player in recent days.
Tottenham are now hopeful of cashing in on the player. The report also highlights some of the difficulties the Belgian club might have with putting a deal together.
Firstly, the two clubs are currently £11 million apart on Tottenham’s £17 million transfer valuation. Then there is the problem of his substantial wages. Clearly, getting this deal done will not be easy.
Brugge did always sound like a strange option for a player of Wanyama’s calibre.
However, they do have a number of reasons to be hopeful of doing a deal. Firstly, they are flush. The club have made several big-money sales this summer which has seen Wanyama move into their potential range. Secondly, they might be able to offer Champions League football.
But one factor that could also be a big help in convincing Wanyama of a move is the manager.
Philippe Clement is in charge at the club and he and Wanyama are in fact former team-mates. The pair played in the same Germinal Beerschot side in Antwerp from 2009 until 2011. Wanyama left for Celtic that year whilst Clement retired and took up a scouting role at Club Brugge.
Now he might have a chance to work with Wanyama yet again and he will undoubtedly be relishing such an opportunity.
