Phil Thompson predicts what people will do only after Mohamed Salah leaves Liverpool

Mohamed Salah continues to write his name into the history books at Liverpool.

Another brace against Newcastle on Wednesday evening moved Salah closer to the top of the Reds’ all-time scoring charts.

Salah has his eye on Ian Rush’s record, and while he may not be able to break that record, his legacy as an all-time great at Liverpool is certainly secure.

Salah has been tipped as a Ballon d’Or winner this season, and he could be the first Liverpool player to win that award since Michael Owen.

The Egyptian is undoubtedly one of the best players in the word, but according to Phil Thompson, speaking on the Official Liverpool Podcast, Salah’s greatness will only truly be recognised once he has left the club.

Mohamed Salah’s legacy will be enhanced when he leaves Liverpool

Thompson spoke about Salah and the way he is viewed within the game.

The pundit says that, sadly, we will only grasp just how good the £34m man is once he has left Liverpool and his entire story at Anfield has been written.

“It’s truly amazing, real greatness, and he is one of the greatest ever players, but real greatness comes after you finish players. It’s sad that isn’t it? You don’t actualy get it. We love him, but that proper greatness comes when you’ve left the club, whether you retire or you move on. People will then go ‘that was a player, remember Mo Salah.’ Not just his goals, but the assists he creates with it,” Thompson said.

Is Mohamed Salah leaving Liverpool?

Thompson says that Salah’s legacy will be enhanced when he leaves Liverpool, but, of course, that isn’t something that Reds supporters will want to stomach for a long time yet.

Salah’s contract is up next summer, but, by the sounds of things, there could be progress on that front very soon.

Salah is now open to a one-year contract extension at Liverpool, while Salah’s contract talks are said to be going well.

Of course, as Thompson says, one day, Salah will leave Liverpool, whether he joins another club or decides to retire, but Liverpool will be hoping that day is a long way away yet.

Salah is arguably playing the best he ever has, and the thought of the winger leaving Anfield at this point must be stomach-churning for many fans.

Luckily, it does sound like a new contract could be on the horizon for Salah, and who knows? Perhaps he could still end up topping the all-time Liverpool goalscoring charts by the time he is done.
