Phil Jagielka suggests he’s on Liverpool’s side over something that happened at Everton

Everton struck late on to salvage a 2-2 draw with Liverpool in a dramatic final Merseyside derby at Goodison Park.

Beto opened the scoring for David Moyes’ side after just 11 minutes, only for Alexis Mac Allister to draw Liverpool level five minutes later.

Mohamed Salah then struck for the Reds midway through the second half, and it looked as though the visitors were set for victory.

However, Everton had other ideas and, in the eighth minute of injury time, James Tarkowski lashed in a superb volley for a share of the spoils.

There was further drama late as Arne Slot, his assistant, and two players – one on each side – were sent off after the final whistle.

Everton cult hero Phil Jagielka spoke about the fracas at the end of the game and suggested that he was actually on Slot’s side.

Phil Jagielka sympathises with Arne Slot after Everton equaliser v Liverpool

Jagielka suggested that it was plain to see why Slot was furious at the end of the match.

The Liverpool boss had taken exception to a coming together between Beto and Ibrahima Konate in the build-up to Everton’s equaliser.

Konate was in mid-air when Beto appeared to push him, which enabled the ball to bounce and ultimately find its way to Tarkowski for the goal.

“You can see why Arne Slot was furious,” Jagielka said on .

“There was a slight little nudge in the box and if that was my team I would be appealing. I would be getting sent off after the game too.

“Slot always talks about staying composed but it seems like he lost a bit of his composure at the end there. That’s what a derby does to you.”

Why Curtis Jones and Abdoulaye Doucoure were also sent off

Slot and assistant Sipke Hulshoff were not the only individuals who were sent off after the game.

Abdoulaye Doucoure and Curtis Jones were also dismissed, although neither player was shown a straight red, rather a second yellow.

Doucoure celebrated in front of the Liverpool fans after Everton’s equaliser, and Jones took exception to this.

The Liverpool midfielder ran over and pushed the Everton man away from the away end, leading to both teams clashing.

Both Jones and Doucoure had been booked during the game and, after calm was restored, referee Michael Oliver showed them a second yellow card.

“They are entitled to celebrate the goal,” Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk said after the match.

“But Doucoure wanted to provoke our fans and Curtis thought that wasn’t the right thing to do. Then there was a tussle.

“The referee didn’t have the game under control, I said that to him. It is a factor. Both teams had to deal with it.”
