Phil Hay says Leeds want 23-year-old player on loan, but his club would rather sell him

Leeds United have some work to do before the end of the transfer window.

The Yorkshire club have waved goodbye to both Djed Spence and Luke Ayling already this month, and they need new full-backs in to cover for those departures.

Luckily, the transfer window still has some way to run, and Leeds are on the case.

Speaking on , Phil Hay has been discussing the Whites’ transfer plans for the remainder of this month, and he’s touched on their interest in Ben Johnson from West Ham.

Hay says that Leeds are keen on doing a loan deal for Johnson, but West Ham would rather sanction a permanent sale due to the time remaining on his contract.

West Ham would rather sell Johnson

Hay shared what he knows about the 23-year-old.

“Ben Johnson down at West Ham is not getting many minutes. Leeds would like to do that on loan if it is him they go for, but I think West Ham because of where his contract is at, would prefer to take a fee and sell him. From what I’m hearing down the West Ham end they wouldn’t be against tying him to a new deal if they can because they do really rate him,” Hay said.

Difficult

This could be a difficult deal to do under these circumstances.

As a recently relegated club who’ve spent plenty over the past 18 months, Leeds don’t have tons of wriggle room when it comes to FFP, and if Johnson is to make a permanent move away from West Ham, he may not be too keen to drop down to the Championship.

As Hay says, West Ham do rate Johnson and are happy to give him a new deal, and if it comes to a decision between a new contract with a Europa League club or a permanent transfer to a Championship side, then we wouldn’t blame Johnson one bit for choosing to stay in east London.
