Phil Hay says ‘excellent’ Leeds player is likely to leave now

Charlie Cresswell was earmarked as potentially a key player for Leeds United heading into this season.

The young centre-back looked readymade to step into the Leeds backline this season. The likes of Robin Koch and Max Wober had left, while Cresswell was coming off a fantastic season with Millwall and a brilliant Euros with England’s U21s.

However, he’s not played as much as he would probably like, and he’s made no secret of that, posting on Instagram about his lack of minutes recently.

Simply put, Cresswell doesn’t seem happy, and speaking on , Phil Hay has stated that he probably expects Cresswell to leave the club, claiming that the vibe coming out of the camp is that he definitely wants to go.

Cresswell likely to leave

Hay spoke about the ‘’ defender.

“It’s hard for me to see a way in which this doesn’t end with Cresswell leaving, we’ve seen this dance before and the vibes you’re getting is that Cresswell definitely wants to go and if there was the right offer and a suitable offer Leeds would let him. The problem is that the interest in him is coming from the Championship and you have to be strategic in terms of letting players go elsewhere and thinking what they may do in terms of compromising your season, and Leeds wouldn’t want him to go to another club who are in the mix with them in the Championship,” Hay said.

Shame

It’s a massive shame to see Cresswell’s Leeds career turn out like this.

This is a young man who came through the club’s academy, and he was earmarked for stardom from a young age.

He has bags of talent and potential, but sadly, in a promotion-chasing season, you can’t risk giving young players too many chances when you’re playing so well.

Cresswell is likely to leave Leeds now, and we wouldn’t be shocked at all if the Whites lived to regret this decision in a few years’ time.
