Phil Hay: Crystal Palace join Leeds in chase for £8m-rated midfielder this summer

website that Crystal Palace are battling Leeds for Huddersfield’s Lewis O’Brien. The midfielder has been eyed by Leeds for much of the transfer window. Hay says Huddersfield want as much as £8million for O’Brien.

O’Brien, 22, has starred at Huddersfield over the past couple of years – since joining the club from Bradford in the summer of 2019. In his two seasons at Huddersfield, he has clocked up 81 appearances for Carlos Corberan’s side having a hand in 12 goals. His passing as a midfielder has caught the eye.

Hay has told The Athletic’s Q&A page that O’Brien remains a target for Leeds. But Huddersfield want £8million and Leeds do not want to pay as much as that figure. Hay claims there is a chance a compromise can be made, but that he has been told Palace have joined Leeds in the race.

“Leeds like him, Bielsa likes him. But their valuation and Huddersfield’s valuation are still not in line. Huddersfield want at least £8m,” “Leeds think that’s over the odds. So as we speak, it hasn’t made progress. But there’s time left in the window, you see things change all the time.

“Palace were mentioned to me yesterday as a club who like O’Brien,” “Might be something in that (or might just be an attempt to twist Leeds’ arm).”

Leeds must meet O’Brien valuation, with Palace spending cash

Palace have waved goodbye to a number of players this summer following the end of their contracts. They have had to move fast, spend money and sign players. Remi Matthews, Joachim Andersen, Michail Olise, Marc Guehi and Conor Gallagher have all joined – the best part of £50million.

Steve Parish has shown he is more than willing to put his money where his mouth is – if the player in question has resale value. At 22, English and getting better with every game he plays – O’Brien is that. He is also that, because Huddersfield want just £8million. Leeds must move quick.
