Peterborough co-owner Darragh MacAnthony makes Ivan Toney Tottenham claim
Peterborough United’s co-owner Darragh MacAnthony has claimed Tottenham Hotspur wanted to sign Ivan Toney in the summer, but the pandemic scuppered a potential transfer.
Toney has been in blistering form for Championship side Brentford so far in 2020/21, scoring 15 league goals in 18 appearances.
The 24-year-old is currently top of the goalscoring charts, one ahead of Blackburn Rovers’ Adam Armstrong.
Eyebrows were raised when Toney secured his move to Brentford from Peterborough in the summer, with the Bees reportedly agreeing a fee that could eventually reach £10 million ().
But it seems he might not have ended up making the move at all had it not been for the pandemic.
MacAnthony said (): “David Pleat [ex-Spurs manager and now club consultant] tried hard to get Ivan to Spurs. He was in constant contact with Barry Fry over him and he spoke to Daniel Levy about him.
“David thought Ivan was a relatively cheap option to boost the Spurs squad what with all Harry Kane’s injury problems. Levy might have been worried Spurs fans would laugh at him for signing a League One player, but in any case the pandemic ruined any chance of the move going ahead.”
TBR’s View – Toney would have been Spurs risk
Spurs signing Toney would have been risky business.
He may be really firing right now and he did have a brilliant 2019/20 with Posh, but the Premier League is a big step up.
He could well go on to finish the season as the Championship’s top scorer, and perhaps Spurs could then have another look at the player next summer, and also see how their own loan star Carlos Vinicius has got on.
