Peter Shilton urges Fraser Forster and Alex McCarthy to leave Southampton

As quoted by the , Peter Shilton has urged goalkeepers Fraser Forster and Alex McCarthy to leave Southampton this summer.

The Saints have a number of top class shot-stoppers on their books. As well as Forster and McCarthy, the south coast club also boast Angus Gunn amongst their ranks. Shilton said of the situation at St Mary’s Stadium, “it’s very difficult to keep three goalkeepers at that standard happy”.

Speaking of Forster, the former Southampton and England No. 1 continued to say, “I would have thought that Fraser Forster would want to be playing first team football”. The 31-year-old has fallen down the pecking order in recent seasons. He is unlikely to start the new campaign as Ralph Hasenhuttl’s No. 1.

His current contract with the Saints runs until 2022. However, if the 6-cap England man is to stand any chance of returning to the international fold he must get back to being a regular starter at the top level as soon as possible. He is unlikely to reclaim the first choice spot with Southampton, so the time has probably come to move on.

McCarthy, meanwhile, may well be the Austrian coach’s preferred pick between the sticks for the new season. However, Saints legend Shilton believes that with Gunn improving rapidly, the time may be right for the once-capped England man to seek pastures new too.

Shilton said, “I know Gunn is up and coming and is promising. He would be one for the future as well as the present. I would think McCarthy and Forster are the ideal ones to try and move on.”

Southampton are unlikely to move on both McCarthy and Forster this summer. However, Shilton has made it clear that their days at St Mary’s Stadium may be numbered, as Gunn is currently in the ascendancy.
