Peter Crouch says Tottenham are making real statement with their 23-year-old

Peter Crouch believes that Cristian Romero has been a real statement signing for Tottenham at around .

Spurs moved this summer to bring in the 23-year-old from Italian club Atalanta, who he helped to a third-placed finish in Serie A last season.

The Argentine centre-back earned huge praise for his performances throughout the last campaign, so the youngster looks a really exciting addition to the Premier League.

Spurs waved goodbye this window to Toby Alderweireld. Him, along with fellow Belgian Jan Vertonghen, were the nailed-on centre-back pairing for the north London club for several years. However, there is a massive gap now that both have left.

It feels like the heart of defence is a key area that new manager Nuno Espirito Santo will need to fix quickly.

Crouch seems confident that summer signing Romero can be a big solution in the backline. He acknowledges it’s a sizeable fee to pay Atalanta, but views this is a statement signing.

“At £42.5m, there is no escaping that this is a big fee for Cristian Romero from Atalanta,” Crouch told .

“But Tottenham desperately needed a proper central defender. Their organisation at the back requires some sorting.

“I like him as a player and he has Champions League experience. It shows intent by Spurs… Romero is a statement.”

Tottenham new boy Cristian Romero can be one of the signings of the summer

Firstly, Spurs deserve immense credit for spending big when signing a new commanding centre-back was key.

It remains to be seen how Romero adapts to the Premier League, but he looks a class act.

The South American should bring a great balance between physicality and calmness on the ball to make a difference in a defence that needs restructuring. It’s exciting to see how Nuno rebuilds the backline.

Spurs fans are now desperate for the club to deal with the Harry Kane saga with the same conviction.
