Peter Crouch says Alan Sugar tried to sign Steven Gerrard for Tottenham following youth game
Peter Crouch has revealed that former Tottenham chairman Sir Alan Sugar attempted to sign Steven Gerrard following a youth game between Spurs and Liverpool.
, the former England international recalled a tale from his time in the youth set-up where he faced off against Gerrard and Liverpool, with the now-Rangers manager impressing so well that Sugar tried to sign him straight after the game, but as we know, a transfer to Spurs never happened.
Crouch said about his youth football clash with Gerrard: “Steven played that day and was ridiculous; he was on another level. He was so good that Alan Sugar immediately tried to sign him for Tottenham afterwards, but it was a complete non-starter.”
Gerrard went on to captain Liverpool to a UEFA Champions League trophy as well as two FA Cups, with the former England international recently claiming his first piece of silverware as a manager with Rangers as the Glaswegian side claimed the Scottish Premiership title, going unbeaten in the league and conceding just 13 goals across 36 games.

It’s odd to picture Gerrard in anything but the red of Liverpool, with the Premier League icon remaining to this day one of the best midfielders to ever grace the division and a legend in the eyes of many football supporters around the world, and Sugar must have been dreaming if he thought he could lure the then-teenager south to Tottenham.
Gerrard was destined to play for and captain Liverpool, with the midfielder going on to be one of the club’s best-ever players and a coach who is now tipped to replace Jurgen Klopp as manager one day in the future after leading Rangers to their first league trophy in over a decade.
