Peter Crouch previously claimed Tottenham-linked Jesse Lingard ‘terrifies opponents’

Tottenham are being linked with Manchester United’s Jesse Lingard, who is someone that previously earned big praise from ex-Spurs forward Peter Crouch.

, United’s 27-year-old is open to a potential move to Spurs during this summer window amid interest from them.

The report claims that Jose Mourinho’s side are interested in the attacking midfielder, but there is competition from Russian top-flight club Zenit St. Petersburg for his signature.

Spurs have already been extremely busy in the summer transfer window so far with plenty of new arrivals and it looks like the North London club may not be done yet.

Lingard has seen his career take a downward spiral at Old Trafford in the past couple of years and he’s not been the same player since returning from the 2018 World Cup.

The 24-time capped England international is a versatile star that can be used in wide areas of in a more central number 10 position, but he’s struggled for minutes under current United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Crouch previously raved about the talent of Lingard back in 2018 prior to the World Cup, which goes to show how highly-rated he was only a couple of years ago.

“He never fails to impress me. He’s got so much pace and that terrifies opponents. I played in England teams that had midfielders with great technical ability but this squad has a different dimension with its speed,”

TBR’s View:

Lingard certainly wouldn’t be a marquee addition for Spurs if they do sign him and it may be one that divides the fanbase, but if he’s available on the cheap it could be worth doing.

The English playmaker was playing some of his best football during the 2017/18 season, which is when he was working at United under current Spurs manager Mourinho.

He finished that campaign with 13 goals and seven assists across all competitions, so if Mourinho can get him back to that standard he’s an energetic player with a great work-rate and quality in the final third.

But right now Spurs need to prioritise the signing of a new striker before the window shuts and their focus should be on that right now, as they need some cover for talisman Harry Kane.
