Peter Crouch names the Liverpool duo who ‘weren’t in the game’ during Atalanta loss

Liverpool’s hopes of reaching the Champions League knockout stages are still in the balance following a 2-0 defeat to Serie A outfit Atalanta at Anfield.

Afterwards, Peter Crouch suggested to that he was disappointed Liverpool didn’t get two influential stars more involved.

The Reds were defeated after goals from Josip Ilicic and Robin Gosens with the Italians making amends for a 5-0 drubbing on home soil during the last round of European fixtures.

Crouch knows all about playing in the Champions League for Liverpool and during his work for BT Sport he thought Atalanta were worthy winners.

The ex-striker also claimed that the Reds’ downfall was due to not getting a key duo into the game more

“There wasn’t much urgency, the levels went down slightly. You looked at Salah and Mane and they weren’t in the game.

“Credit should go to Atalanta, they stopped them from playing. (Papu) Gonez and Illicic were the two best players on the pitch tonight.”

TBR View – Food for thought for Klopp

Salah and Mane endured a rare off night but of course, they will certainly bounce back from this defeat.

For players like Divock Origi, it might not be quite so easy to force their way back into contention for a starting berth.

Liverpool lethal wing duo have come up trumps more often than not in the past and they’ll certainly have better days.

It does, however, highlight the importance of getting the duo on the ball in order to make Klopp’s system thrive.

Salah and Mane have 15 goals between them this season and are once again Klopp’s important options going forward.

The arrival of Diogo Jota has taken some of the burden back but the pair will want to bounce back as quickly as possible.
