Peter Crouch critical of Firmino after poor pass in Liverpool tie

Peter Crouch that Roberto Firmino made a really poor error during the first-half as Liverpool faced Benfica, having failed to set up Luis Diaz for a tap-in.

The Reds are through to the last four of the Champions League. Jurgen Klopp’s men went into the second-leg with a 3-1 lead after Diaz had scored a late goal in Portugal last week.

And it seemed that it was set to be a simple night for Liverpool. Ibrahima Konate gave them an early lead with a header. But Benfica struck back with a brilliant finish.

Liverpool had the opportunity to go back in front before the break. Firmino found himself through on goal. However, the Brazilian decided to try and find Diaz rather than shoot himself.

Unfortunately, the pass was underhit. And Alex Grimaldo was able to produce an amazing sliding challenge to stop Diaz getting to the ball. The Colombian could not hide his frustration.

And Crouch noted at half-time that Firmino needed to do a lot better given the quality he has.

“Luis Diaz was fuming, wasn’t he. I think you can see what he thought of it. You’ve just got to put more pace on the pass. For a man of Firmino’s ability, it just needs a little more. It’s great defending, but Diaz was fuming,” .

Firmino more than made up for error in second-half as Liverpool get themselves into semi-final

Thankfully, the mistake did not cost Liverpool. And Firmino was the man to make sure that they got themselves into the last four of the Champions League.

He put them back in front 10 minutes into the second-half. And he extended their advantage 10 minutes after that. They were two outstanding finishes from the 30-year-old. Benfica would fight back to draw on the night. But Liverpool are through.

He now has five goals in the competition this season. But it may perhaps irk him slightly that he is still awaiting that first assist.
