Perry Groves says he can’t help but really like Tottenham man

Perry Groves has admitted that he cannot help but like Ange Postecoglou, but he did disagree with a couple of things he said after Tottenham Hotspur beat Nottingham Forest on Friday night.

Spurs made it back-to-back victories for the first time since October, with Richarlison and Dejan Kulusevski scoring in either half.

Despite Tottenham’s recent form, there – rightfully – seemed to be very few questions asked of Ange Postecoglou and his future.

Perry Groves says he cannot help but like Ange Postecoglou

Postecoglou took so little time to capture the imagination of Tottenham fans following his appointment in the summer. Spurs play arguably the most exciting football in the Premier League. And for some time, they were leading the way in the league.

Perry Groves has now suggested on that he begrudgingly really likes the Tottenham boss. However, he admitted that he could not agree with him defending Yves Bissouma over his red card challenge, or suggesting that he could empathise with Nottingham Forest boss Steve Cooper.

“I’m trying not to like Ange, obviously being manager of that mob up the road. But I can’t, because I do really like him. It’s like liking the geezer who’s run off with your missus. You think he’s quite a decent bloke really,” he said.

“But the two things there where he says about Yves Bissouma, where it’s not malicious. It is malicious because he’s actually gone with a straight foot with his studs showing. And he’s lucky that he doesn’t actually catch Yates with his foot in the ground, or his knee because that can be a bad ACL or an ankle breaker if you actually catch the foot that’s in the ground.

“And when he said Coops, his best mate, he said, ‘I was in the same position a couple of weeks ago’. And you go, ‘Ange mate, no you weren’t. You’re safe’.”

Tottenham getting their rewards again

While Postecoglou was seemingly not coming under pressure, his methods – which were so successful at the start of the season – came under real scrutiny when Spurs lost a few games on the spin.

Ultimately, Tottenham are not yet the finished article. Their squad is really lacking depth in a number of areas. And that lack of depth has been really exposed after they lost the likes of James Maddison and Micky van de Ven to injury.

But there is absolutely no question that Spurs are moving in the right direction at a rapid rate.

That made criticism of Postecoglou’s tactics somewhat farcical when Tottenham were losing games, particularly when they led in all of those fixtures.

As a neutral, it is good to see Postecoglou’s side now getting their rewards again.
