‘Permission to speak’, ‘talks are ongoing’: Steven Gerrard opens up on futures of Rangers duo

Glasgow Rangers manager Steven Gerrard says Greg Docherty and Ross McCrorie are both in talks to leave Ibrox, and has ruled out the possibility of the duo going back out on loan.

Neither Docherty nor McCrorie have featured in Gers’ first three Scottish Premiership games of the season, and as such appear surplus to Gerrard’s requirements at Ibrox.

Docherty, 23, spent the second half of last season on loan at Hibernian, while McCrorie, 22, spent the entire 2019-20 campaign south of the border with English side Portsmouth.

However, Gerrard has admitted that neither player is in line for a loan move this season, hinting that the next step for them if they leave Ibrox is on a permanent basis.

Speaking after his side went top of the Premiership with a 3-0 win over St Johnstone on Wednesday, Gerrard is quoted by as saying: “Hull are in for Greg Docherty so he has had permission to speak to them.

“We have had some interest from Hibs in Ross McCrorie. Those talks are ongoing. But Ross and Greg will not be going on loan. They have been on two loans. They have done that road.

“If we get bids that we like, that are good enough and big enough, we will consider them. But they won’t be going on loan.”

TBR View:

While not actively looking to offload Docherty or McCrorie, Gerrard’s comments suggest that their time at Rangers is up – if they’re not getting game time and won’t be going on loan, that narrows it down to a permanent exit.

Both players are talented but, as they’ve not managed to break into the Rangers first time at 22 and 23, then perhaps the best step is for them to move on and get first-team football elsewhere.
